Rudolph with your spiral so tight can you win the game tonight? That was the question on all Steelers fans two days before Christmas. Mason answered with an impressive performance. While some are calling for him to be QB1 regardless of health need to go back to the last time we played the Bengals and look at Kenny’s numbers, aside from the touchdown passes Kenny had better numbers. The only thing you should take away from this game quarterback wise is that Mitch Trubisky is done in Pittsburgh. If Kenny is healthy he should get the nod. Mason has had success before and faltered shortly thereafter. Those calling him for QB1 are the same ones who wanted him benched for Duck four years ago. Kenny is under contract Mason isn’t. Kenny looked good without Canada too and the front office needs to evaluate Kenny not Mason. Mason was a free agent last year and got nowhere. One game won’t change the rest of the league’s mind. Two or three might. Your best move is to play a healthy Kenny and bench Mason so you don’t lose him in the offseason.
George Pickens took all the flack he’s gotten over the past few weeks and used it as fuel. His first reception was a 10-yard slant 86 yards to pay dirt. He finished the game with 4 receptions for 195 and 2TDs which included an amazing 40-yard toe tap back shoulder fade. The rushing attack was formidable but only managed 113 yards total but did contribute 2 TDs. Najee had the lion’s share with 19 attempts and 78 yards.
Defensively the Steelers were down their top four safeties leaving recently signed Eric Rowe to start at free safety and career cornerback Patrick Peterson slotted in at strong safety. Both managed to register a pick on Jake Browning. Alex Highsmith added a third interception and a sack. TJ and another recent signee Myles Jack added a sack a piece.
The team got a much-needed with to satiate their rabid fans. This season is a wash for those who understand football. Kenny Pickett or Mason could lead them to a playoff appearance but without a true offensive identity, it’ll be lost. I’m not saying give up on the season but understand that this offseason and next season are the goal.
