Today we will be looking at perhaps the strangest event to happen this season.
Picture this you are a Broncos fan and the date is September 17th, 2015. You just watched your team beat the Chiefs 31-24. Your feeling pretty happy, but little did you realize that this would be the last time the Broncos would beat the Chiefs for nearly 8 years falling 0-16 against them. Let’s fast forward a bit to October 29th, 2023. A fresh coat of snow has just fallen over Denver. A bunch of fans are huddled together trying to stay warm in the fridged afternoon getting ready to watch what would surely be another heartbreaking loss to the Chiefs. The Broncos would score first off a quick dump-off to RB Javonte Williams who took to the house barreling over defenders. The Chiefs would take possession and stall out having to settle for a FG. 1st QTR Broncos lead 7-3. The Chiefs would go into the 2nd QTR driving down the field until MLB Josey Jewell hits MVS and forces a fumble which Justin Simmons recovers. The Broncos would take that opportunity and drive down and Russell Wilson would find Jerry Jeudy for TD. The Chiefs would attempt to shake it off and move the ball down the field. Fortunately for Denver Rookie CB Ja’Quan McMillian had a different idea and would make a beautiful interception giving the Chiefs their 2nd turnover of the half. Unfortunately, Denver wouldn’t do much with it and would turn the ball over on downs. Allowing the Chiefs to march down the field, but the once heavily criticized defense steps up again and holds the Chiefs to a FG. The Broncos would once again fail to move the ball and would punt the ball again. The Chiefs would take possession and try to move the ball but LB Barron Browning sacks Patrick and causes him to fumble forcing the 3rd turnover of the half. However, the Chiefs would return the favor and would strip-sack Wilson with only a few seconds left on the clock. The Chiefs would make the most of this and get into FG range where Butker would nail his 3rd FG ending the half trailing the Broncos 14-9. To start the 3rd QTR the Broncos’ drive would stall and would send out K Wil Lutz whose attempt would be blocked by Justin Reid. After some back-and-forth defensive battles, the 3rd QTR would end with neither team scoring. The 4th QTR would look the same until the Chiefs WR/punt return man would fumble the ball near the Chiefs endzone setting the Broncos up for an easy TD to Courtland Sutton. Later in the 4th Patrick would throw his 5th interception to Broncos S Justin Simmons resulting in 5 total turnovers for the Chiefs. The Broncos would kick a FG making the final score 24-9. Wow, it’s been an eternity and not only did we beat the Chiefs but we also held them to 0 TDs.
Thoughts on the game?
Feels incredible to win a game against a division rival, but it feels even better after they have thoroughly crushed your team for years.
Unfortunately, though there were a lot of ugly moments in this game like the offensive line trying to get Russell Wilson put on IR giving up 6 sacks.
Javonte Williams had a solid outing totaling 85 yards off 27 carries. 1 receiving TD.
Wilson while not throwing for insane yardage was efficient going 12/19 for 114 yards and 3 TDs.
I’d also like to apologize to Vance Joseph and calling him hot garbage and being unable to make a halfway decent defensive game plan. Holding Patrick and company to 0 TDs is an impressive feat that few can achieve.
All in all, I’m happy Broncos country. We beat the Chiefs and we get to head into the bye week after winning back-to-back games. Broncos Country let’s ride
