Well…that was certainly not what we wanted but kind of expected. With week 2 now in the books let’s take a look at the Broncos vs. Commanders match-up.
It’s an age-old saying “It’s not how you start It’s how you finish” I feel this game is the definition of that quote. In the 2nd QTR, the Broncos were up 21-3 on the Commanders and they looked unstoppable. Mims and Wilson were cooking, the defense was playing hard. Everything looked good in Broncos country. Then a questionable tackle on Wilson led to a fumble that the Commanders picked up, and would march down the field and score a questionable touchdown and a 2-point conversation. No worries theres less than 2 minutes left on the clock and the Broncos are up 21-11. Fast-forward just a little bit there are 2 seconds on the clock and the Commanders are getting ready to attempt a 49-yard FG. Their kicker has already missed one prior, but he nails it making it 21-14 at the half. The Broncos lost almost every once of momentum in the 2nd half, and could only muster 2 FGs while letting the Commanders score 21 points in the 2nd half. The score is now 35 – 27. The Broncos get the ball back with little time left and no timeouts. They move the ball to just shy of the 50-yard line. With only a few seconds left Wilson sends it downfield on a hail marry attempt, and off 2 deflections Rookie Brandon Johnson catches his 2nd TD. All that’s left is a 2-point conversion and they can send the game to OT. Wilson finds Sutton in the endzone, but unfortunately, Commanders DB Benjamin St-Juste grabs Sutton and prevents him from making the catch ending the game 35-33.
My thoughts on the game.
Yes, we all know that was a PI and should have been called, but I’m going to be honest with you guys. That play shouldn’t have even had to happen. You can’t let 1 mistake ruin a game. The Broncos lost because we played soft in the 2nd half. Our defense let up and let them score at will while our offense reverted to last week’s offense. You can’t let the other team claw their way back into a game like that. I figured the defense would take a couple of steps back from last year after hiring Former Broncos HC Vance Joseph….a name Broncos country never wanted to hear again.
The good news is the offense does look much improved from last year. We got to see flashes of the old Wilson. 4 touchdowns were scored by our rookies, Jaleel McLaughlin, Brandon Johnson, and Marvin Mims. It’s nice to watch the rookies rise to the occasion and contribute.
I still think this team can be very competitive and dangerous. We just need to smooth out the rough patches and keep working on the things we are doing well. I don’t want to jump ship and board the S.S. Fire Sean and cut Wilson ship quite yet. I think this team will start to heat up in a couple more weeks once the chemistry is there.
Oh, and Wil Lutz hit both FG attempts and all his extra points.. so that’s also good news. On to next week where we will face…oh man the Dolphins.
