In their first meeting ever, #7 Penn State Nittany Lions[2-0] defeats Unranked Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens[1-1] 63-7. Next week, Penn State travels to play Illinois while Delaware hosts St. Francis[PA].
1st Quarter: On Penn State’s first offensive drive, Running Back Nicholas Singleton runs in a 2-yard touchdown. So far I do not like how conservative these play calls have been in this game. When playing Delaware I expect some aggressive play calls. Penn State Running Back Kaytron Allen runs in a 4-yard touchdown. Delaware Running Back Marcus Yarns scores a 66-yard rushing touchdown. Awful run defense continues to plague this defense.
2nd Quarter: Nicholas Singleton runs in a 5-yard touchdown for Penn State. Nicholas Singleton runs in another 5-yard touchdown. Penn State Quarterback Drew Allar throws a 2-yard touchdown to Tight End Tyler Warren. Penn State leads at halftime 35-7.
3rd Quarter: Drew Allar runs a QB sneak for a 1-yard touchdown. Delaware Running Back Marcus Yarns fumbles and Defensive Back Kevin Winston Jr. recovers for Penn State at the Delaware 31-yard line. Backups start to come into the game for Penn State, including Quarterback Beau Pribula. Beau Pribula runs in a 6-yard touchdown. Delaware Quarterback Zach Marker throws an interception to Linebacker Dominic DeLuca who returns it 27-yards for a touchdown.
4th Quarter: Delaware Kicker Alex Schmoke misses a 46-yard field goal wide left. Beau Pribula throws a 4-yard touchdown to Wide Receiver Omari Evans. Penn State runs out the rest of the clock as they win 63-7.
Key Nittany Lions of the Game:
Run Offense-I thought about picking Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen to highlight but Trey Potts and both Quarterbacks also ran well. This is what I wanted to see last week versus West Virginia. 60 carries for 315 rushing yards and 6 rushing touchdowns is incredible. This led to 42 minutes and 22 seconds of possession time.
Run Defense-Do not let the score fool you. The run defense still had its issues. There is a lot to fix up for the big games later this season. 16 carries for 112 rushing yards and a touchdown allowed to non-Quarterbacks. They can not have that happen against other colleges.
Overall, this was a great team win against an inferior opponent.
