The Chiefs defeated the Chargers at SoFi stadium to sweep the season against them and take a commanding division lead. The Chiefs went into this game with several injuries and more built up during the game, however, that didn’t stop KC from dropping 30 points and a win.
The Chiefs were able to strike 1st when Butker hit a 33-yard field goal on the Chiefs’ opening drive. However, the Chargers’ offense exploded and went 75 yards in just 3 plays to storm to a 7-3 lead early. The Chiefs and Chargers would then trade field goals. KC would get the ball and go 75 yards in 7 plays that was capped off when Mahomes and Kelce connected for a 4-yard TD reception. The Teams would then trade punts but when LAC got the ball back they were able to find the end zone again to take the lead back. LAC would tack on an FG before the half. The teams would head into the locker room with LAC leading 20-13.
The Chargers would receive the 2nd half kick-off but weren’t able to do anything and were forced to punt. KC would then be forced to kick another field goal to cut the lead to 20-16. The Chiefs’ defense would force another Charger punt. Then the Chiefs would drive 86 yards in 10 plays for a TD when Mahomes found Kelce again. The Chiefs’ defense would then force a Keenan Allen fumble and have a chance to put a nail in the Chargers with another TD but Jerick McKinnon would fumble himself and give the ball back to LAC. That fumble by McKinnon set up a 10-play drive spanning 5 minutes and a Chargers touchdown to give them a 27-23 lead with 1:46 left to play. Then Mahomes would go to work! The Chiefs would drive 75 yards in 1:15 and Mahomes would connect with Kelce for a 3rd touchdown to give the Chiefs the lead again. The Chargers would have some time to answer but Herbert was intercepted by Nick Bolton. The Chiefs would squeak out a 30-27 win against one of their AFC West foes.
The player of the game for me had to be Travis Kelce! Kelce kept finding ways to get open and had his 2nd 3+ receiving touchdown game of the season.
A couple of other key performers were:
Patrick Mahomes: 20/34, 329 yards, 3 TDs
Isiah Pacheco: 15 carries, 107 yards, he would also average over 7 yards let carry. Pacheco would record his first career 100-yard rushing game!
The Chiefs’ defense would also force 2 turnovers and sack Justin Herbert 5 times.
What’s next?
Chargers (5-5) @ (4-6) Cardinals
Rams (3-7) @ (8-2) Chiefs
